We are delighted to announce that we are taking on the responsibility of managing the new community fridge, situated at Planted Cafe in Charlton Kings. The volunteer-supported vegan café, located at Sixways, also functions as a loose food
shop and community hub.
Why have a community fridge?
A community fridge is a multi-faceted initiative; It creates social contact, enabling people
to come together in a shared space; it also helps to tackle food waste by diverting
surplus food away from landfill and onto the dinner tables of local residents. The fridge
is open to all, meaning anyone can donate or take food, which often comes from
supermarkets, local businesses, households, local producers and gardens.
Launching Friday 29th November, the community fridge will require help from volunteers. We are looking for community fridge assistants to micro-volunteer between 15-30 minutes on a rota basis. By volunteering your time, you’ll also get to meet some lovely people and be a part of creating something sustainable and communal!
So, what do we need you to do?
Community Fridge Assistant activities are as follows:
Daily fridge temperature checks + log.
Wipe clean the outside and inside of the fridge door + log.
Dispose of any rotten fruit or veg into the compost bin (provided).
Wipe the scales area and check there are forms and pens.
Ensure the paperwork from the day before is put away in the folder.
Check signage and posters are secure and in the right place.
All in all, these tasks should take no more than between 15-30 minutes per day.
The fridge rota will be managed by email and WhatsApp so you must have access to these channels. Full training will be given and all volunteers can help themselves to any of the vegetables, fruits, and herbs in the fridge.
